A-Grade Quarry Operations Manager

You will be helping manage a 200-hectare quarry, consented through 2045, that is part of a family-owned group of horticultural and agribusinesses. After a long period of inactivity, where the quarry was leased, we are back open with new equipment producing greywacke, pumice, and ignimbrite products. Over time, you will be helping shape the future with the opportunity to build your own team around you.
Based in the sunny Bay of Plenty, just 40 minutes from Tauranga, Whakatane and Rotorua, we are in the heart of one of the fastest-growing regions in New Zealand. With stunning natural beauty and plenty of outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, sports, beautiful beaches and many other recreational activities on our doorstep. This region is renowned for its quality of life, has excellent schools and is a great place to raise a family.
If the successful applicant is from out of town, we have a 3-bedroom house available till early October to help you get set up.

Job Title: Quarry Operations Manager
Location: Otamarakau, Western Bay of Plenty (between Tauranga, Whakatane and Rotorua)

About Us:
Our quarry operations are set to expand with new equipment, enabling us to produce a wide range of products, including TNZ spec roading and ready-mix concrete aggregates. Our unique quarry has extensive pumice, ignimbrite, and greywacke resources. You will join a small professional team that wants to be the best, committed to best practices, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Position Overview:
You will be responsible for the day-to-day management and compliance of a pumice, ignimbrite and greywacke quarry with 100-150,000m3 extracted and processed annually. You will be responsible for safely managing the extraction and production activities, restoration work, recruiting and training staff, and troubleshooting and technical problems. You will be responsible for caring for and maintaining the operation’s key assets, including loaders, excavators and mobile processing plants.
We require an adaptable, proactive, lateral thinker passionate about the industry and preserving land and the environment. You must be self-motivated and have a resilient attitude towards life.

This is a hands-on role that has strong administration support.
Key Responsibilities:
• Oversee all aspects of quarry operations, including production, maintenance, and quality control.
• Build a strong, engaged, and happy team culture.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and promote a safety-first culture.
• Support implementing and maintaining best-practice systems to improve efficiency, productivity and workplace harmony. A genuine interest in continuous improvement is essential.
• Support training programs for staff to ensure continuous development and adherence to best practices.
• Monitor and optimise the use of new equipment to achieve production targets and quality standards.
• Input to budgets, manage resources, and schedules to meet operational goals.
• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and promote an environmentally responsible culture. This is a 200-hectare site that requires good knowledge of water management practices including drainage systems, sediment control, erosion control and stormwater management plans. You will appreciate a high standard of housekeeping minimises the hassle and waste of unnecessary downtime and rework fixing roads and water tables.
• Maintain positive relationships with clients, suppliers, and regulatory bodies.
Qualifications, Attitude and Skills:
• Have a character containing authenticity, integrity, honesty and reliability
• Hold an A Grade CoC
• A proactive, can-do attitude – a glass half-full attitude to life.
• Minimum 8 years of industry experience with 3 years as a team leader.
• Be an effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills. We are looking for a leader, not a manager.
• Have a good understanding of resource consents and industry safety and environmental compliance.
• Be patient and measured in pressure and conflict situations.
• Possess strong skills in time management, delegation, listening and decision-making.
• Is a strategic thinker and problem solver.
• Is diligent and supportive of conducting toolboxes and inspections.
• Take care and pride in your work and presentation of the workplace.
• While certain skills are prerequisites, like having an A-Grade CoC, the successful applicant will have a champion attitude toward improvement and a collaborative working style to get it done. We are all learners, so you don’t need to know everything, but having a positive attitude to improvement is important. Better never stops.
