Dean Torstonson

President, IOQ NZ

Dean is a Senior Site Supervisor for Orica New Zealand overseeing the management of the North Island business. He holds an A Grade Quarry Managers certificate and has over 27 years of extensive experience in quarry operations as well underground/surface mining and civil tunnelling both in New Zealand and Australia.

Dean holds a very strong passion and commitment for the quarry Industry with a particular focus on quarrying as the “vocation of choice” for young people. Dean also has a passion for health and safety and the discipline that needs to be applied in the industry to ensure everybody goes home safe each day.

Tim Kennedy

Vice-President, IOQ NZ

Tim Kennedy is currently Fulton Hogan’s Quarries Operation Manager in Gisborne. He has over 30 years’ experience in the quarrying industry in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific. Tim also sits on WorkSafe’s Board of Examiners and brings a knowledge and understanding of, and involvement in, learning and development in the extractives sector. He was also a member of MITO’s sector advisory group on its review of extractives national qualifications. He is a workplace tutor and has been a registered assessor. He holds a New South Wales Diploma in Extractives Industries Management and a number of Australian and New Zealand quarrying CoCs, including a New Zealand A grade quarry manager CoC.

Peter Morgan

Immediate Past-President, IOQ NZ

Peter is 50% owner of Linton Contracting, having recently purchased the HW Richardson Group shares in the company. He has worked in the aggregates and wider construction industry since 1983. This includes roles in all aspects of the sector from chainman (MOW) to Manager (Southern Aggregates) to business owner. Peter enjoys the challenges that business ownership brings including developing young people into valued staff members.

Petrina Torstonson

Secretary/Treasurer, IOQ NZ

Petrina was appointed the position of IOQ NZ National Secretary/Treasurer in 2014. She has extensive knowledge with over 30 years’ experience in both the Banking and Local Government sectors having held a number of positions in Finance throughout her career. Petrina has been indirectly involved in the quarrying industry for many years having attended a number of QuarryNZ conferences.

Neil Cates

Board Member, IOQ NZ

Neil Joined Northland-based Civil Construction and Quarrying business McBreen Jenkins Construction in 2001. Subsequently acquired by Transfield Services and more recently Ventia. Neil has held a variety of positions in the business, and has been the Quarry Division Manager for 10 years, and Regional Manager since 2020. Neil has extensive knowledge of materials and production across both quarrying and construction and maintenance operations.

Chris Gray

Board Member, IOQ NZ

Chris, currently General Manager at MIMICO, has been involved in the quarrying industry for more than 30 years, working in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Coming from North Wales, Chris has a passion for the IOQ and has held IOQ positions in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. On behalf of the IOQ NZ, Chris manages the Youth Programme helping young members of the industry develop a network and further their knowledge.

Brian Bouzaid

Board Member, IOQ NZ

Brian is the Area Manager for Holcim (New Zealand) Ltd’s aggregates business and is an experienced manager with a demonstrated history of working in the quarry, local government, solid waste, recycling and building materials industries. Brian holds an A-Grade Quarry Manager’s CoC and is a current member of the WorkSafe Board of Examiners and Chair of the MITO Industry Council. Brian has also been a past IOQ NZ President, Chair of MinEx, EXITO and board member of MITO. Brian has a strong passion for the IOQ and helping those in the quarry industries.

John Quayle

Board Member, IOQ NZ

John has been a member of the IOQ NZ for over 30 years. He has worked in the sale of mobile plant and machinery for last 33 years and currently works for MIMICO as a Sales Representative in the Auckland Region. John has an extensive knowledge of mobile machinery and the service requirements to keep get the job done. John’s passion for the IOQ NZ stems from the people he has met and the knowledge that has been shared over many years.

Neill Kydd

Board Member, IOQ NZ

Fulton Hogan Industries’ Divisional Manager, Neill has been and around the industry for over 40 years. He started with Fulton Hogan in 1977 and for the last 25 years has been actively managing and overseeing operations for Fulton Hogan in Marlborough. Neill has been on the IOQ executive since 2017 and has been an active Worksafe COC panel member since 2016. He is passionate about the industry and encouraging young and upcoming people in their chosen careers.

Keri Harrison

Board Member, IOQ NZ

A former city girl who grew up Christchurch, Keri had always been captivated by farming and quarrying. Drawing on her experience as both a Health and Safety Manager and a qualified Quarry Manager, Keri runs her own mining and quarrying consultancy business, Tui Creek Consulting Ltd, in the Waimakariri district. Keri provides quarry project services, coaching and mentoring and health and safety advice, while raising her daughter.
Her experience working in both local government and the private sector has helped her to build relationships with the quarry industry and it’s members.

Gordon Laing

Technical Advisor, IOQ NZ

Gordon has over thirty-five years’ experience in the extractives industry. He started his career in South Africa, spending five years working in underground mining followed by three years in open cast mining. He then returned to Scotland working in the quarry sector. In 2000 he moved to New Zealand with his family and since then has worked at several quarries in the Auckland area. For the past eleven years he has been the General Manager at Ihumatao Quarry & Cleanfill. He also holds a current New Zealand A-Grade Quarry Manager’s certificate of competence.

He is a Past President and Fellow Member of the Institute of Quarrying New Zealand (Inc), where he has served on the Executive since 2007 and the Auckland branch committee for eighteen years.
