Chris Gray

President, IOQ NZ

Chris, currently Managing Director of Tracks Concrete and Landscaping, has been involved in the quarrying industry for more than 30 years, working in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Coming from North Wales, Chris has a passion for the IOQ and has held IOQ positions in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. On behalf of the IOQ NZ, Chris manages the Youth Programme helping young members of the industry develop a network and further their knowledge.

Tim Kennedy

Immediate Past President, IOQ NZ

Tim Kennedy is currently Fulton Hogan’s Quarries Operation Manager in Gisborne. He has over 30 years’ experience in the quarrying industry in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific. Tim also sits on WorkSafe’s Board of Examiners and brings a knowledge and understanding of, and involvement in, learning and development in the extractives sector. He was also a member of MITO’s sector advisory group on its review of extractives national qualifications. He is a workplace tutor and has been a registered assessor. He holds a New South Wales Diploma in Extractives Industries Management and a number of Australian and New Zealand quarrying CoCs, including a New Zealand A grade quarry manager CoC.

Petrina Torstonson

Secretary/Treasurer, IOQ NZ

Petrina was appointed the position of IOQ NZ National Secretary/Treasurer in 2014. She has extensive knowledge with over 30 years’ experience in both the Banking and Local Government sectors having held a number of positions in Finance throughout her career. Petrina has been indirectly involved in the quarrying industry for many years having attended a number of QuarryNZ conferences.

Daniel Le Roux

Board Member, IOQ NZ

Following the completion of his Engineering Degree, Dan has spent over 15 years in the quarrying industry. His career started with Winstone Aggregates as a Graduate, and with an A-Grade COC, Dan is now the Business Manager for Rodney Aggregates Supplies. Dan enjoys the variety within the extractives industry and is excited about working with the executive team to pave the future.

Dylan Ward

Board Member, IOQ NZ

Dylan is currently Stevenson Aggregates Tauhei Quarry Supervisor based in the Waikato. He has 10 years’
experience in the quarrying industry predominantly in Hard Rock operations. He holds an A-grade CoC Quarry Managers certificate as well as a New Zealand Diploma in Civil Engineering. Dylan is extremely passionate about the extractive industry and is keen to promote and advocate for young up and coming people to join a great industry. He is also the Secretary for the IOQ Waikato/Bay of Plenty Branch.

James Blacklaws

Board Member, IOQ NZ

James is currently Fulton Hogan’s Quarry Divisional Manager based in Nelson.
He holds an A grade Quarry Managers certificate and enjoys all aspects of quarrying especially developing staff through the industry.
James is passionate about health and safety and has been an active Worksafe COC panel member since 2018.

Jason Blair

Board Member, IOQ NZ

Jason is the Drilling and Systems Manager for Blackhead Quarries Ltd, based in Dunedin. Having graduated from Otago University with his Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Marketing Jason worked internationally as a General Manager, leading teams in Canada, Singapore and New Zealand. First introduced to the quarrying industry as a summer job between university semesters, Jason returned to quarrying in 2018 as Sand Plant and Systems Manager for Blackhead Quarries.

Since his return to the industry, Jason achieved his A grade Certificate of Competence and become the Otago/Southland IOQ Branch chairman. Working in aggregate and sand quarries Jason enjoys the diverse roles and opportunities the quarrying industry offers.

Chris Marshall

Board Member, IOQ NZ

Chris is currently Fulton Hogans Quarry Manager in Marlborough, running their alluvial quarry and asphalt plant. Chris is reasonably new to the industry with 10 years’ experience in quarrying, starting as an operator and moving to his current position. He holds an A grade quarry managers certificate and enjoys all areas of a quarry, from improving plants, overcoming new challenges, to seeing new people get excited and grow within the industry.

Troy Adamson

Board Member, IOQ NZ

Troy Adamson is currently Fulton Hogan’s Pound Road Quarry Manager based in Canterbury.

He has 20 years’ experience in the quarry industry managing both Hard Rock and Alluvial operations.

He holds a New Zealand Diploma in Mining and Quarrying Supervision, a A Grade Quarry managers COC and a few other national certificates in extractives and engineering.

Troy is very passionate about the industry and is a Fellow member of the IOQ and was recently elected chair of the IOQ Canterbury Branch

Murray Discombe

Web Manager, IOQ NZ

Since he joined Fraser Thomas Consulting Engineers Auckland office in 2005, Murray has been part of the civil team in a project administration role predominantly carrying out construction observation of a wide range of civil projects. During that time, he also was the company’s Health & Safety Officer for 8 years. In2011-2012 he assisted carry out Land Damage assessment for hundreds of properties after the Christchurch earthquake in 2011. He joined the quarrying industry in 1988 (Manukau Quarries Limited) and managed quarries in Wellington, Rotorua / Tokoroa area and Auckland.

Murray has been a Member of the IOQ since 1989, joining the Auckland Branch as Secretary the same year. He has also held the Treasurer and Chairman roles and remains on the committee. He joined the IOQ NZ Executive team in 2003 and has been Web Manager since 2004.

Gordon Laing

Technical Advisor, IOQ NZ

Gordon has over thirty-five years’ experience in the extractives industry. He started his career in South Africa, spending five years working in underground mining followed by three years in open cast mining. He then returned to Scotland working in the quarry sector. In 2000 he moved to New Zealand with his family and since then has worked at several quarries in the Auckland area. For the past eleven years he has been the General Manager at Ihumatao Quarry & Cleanfill. He also holds a current New Zealand A-Grade Quarry Manager’s certificate of competence.

He is a Past President and Fellow Member of the Institute of Quarrying New Zealand (Inc), where he has served on the Executive since 2007 and the Auckland branch committee for eighteen years.

Paul Sutton

Education Officer, IOQ NZ

Paul is a career educator who has worked in primary, secondary, tertiary and vocational education sectors. He has over 40 years’ experience in education and holds a Doctor of Professional Studies along with Masters and Bachelor degrees in education, business and health administration.

Paul is committed to developing people to the very best of their ability. He believes that everyone has the right to succeed to the very best of their ability and achieve success if they are prepared to put in the hard work. Paul believes that education is the driving force to making our work places more productive, profitable, safe and responsible.
