“It is with much sadness that I relay the news of the death of my father John who passed away peacefully this morning (24 April 2013) in Dunedin.
Dad worked for Fulton Hogan in a number of roles starting in the late 1950’s and was a Board member from 1960 until his retirement ten years ago. During that time he made a significant contribution to the company as it grew from a small Otago based business to the larger cross-Tasman company we know today.
His management style and values strongly reflect much of the great FH culture we promote today including:
- Safety above all else
- The power of Teamwork
- Keeping things simple – “stick to the basics”
- A dislike of bureaucracy
- Long term outlook (particularly with respect to resource)
- Early advocate of staff superannuation and staff share holding
- Giving managers autonomy and ownership
After retirement Dad continued to be very interested in the performance of the company, being a regular visitor to the Dunedin office and Blackhead Quarry right up to his final weeks. “What was last months turnover like?”, was a frequent question to his sons and Kevin Soper.
John Fulton would have hated a fuss being made of his passing. However, I would invite you to take a few moments to reflect on this influential leader’s contribution to Fulton Hogan. He, along with others of his era (and earlier), laid the foundations for this great company we all work for.”
John Fulton’s contribution to the Institute of Quarrying NZ Branch can not be overlooked. He encouraged attendance at local branch meetings as well as to the annual conferences
His paper – Historical Overview – Sand and Alluvial Quarrying (Otago / Canterbury) presented at the Auckland 1995 Annual Conference, highlighted the development in key South Island areas – Gore, Walton Park, Isaacs – and highlighted the on-going need for a commitment to long-term planning by incorporating controlled landfills, aquatic and wildlife reserves.
John was awarded, in 2004, an Honorary Fellowship
