New continued professional development (CPD) requirements for Certificate of Competence (CoC) holders will come into force from February 2020.
The New Zealand Mining Board of Examiners (the Board) reviewed CPD requirements following a consultation process with affected stakeholders. After considering feedback and submissions, the Board made a recommendation to WorkSafe New Zealand to implement an entirely new framework around CPD requirements to address issues uncovered throughout the consultation process. WorkSafe New Zealand has accepted the recommendation and agreed to set the requirements recommended by the Board.
When CPD requirements were introduced in 2016, the Board noted they would be reviewed in three years to ensure they were fair, reasonable and fit for purpose.
The Board says feedback received was insightful, helpful and well-appreciated and indicated a need for wider change in requirements than what was initially proposed.
Some of the changes include:
- CoC holders can complete their CPD hours over five years with no conditions
- Removal of formal and informal activities and the introduction of unrestricted and restricted activities
- Revise CPD logbook to accommodate changes and encourage emphasis on the components of CPD.
The Board and WorkSafe New Zealand recognise a transitional arrangement will be required to acknowledge initial difficulties with the introduction of CPD.
The Board is also calling for expressions of interest from anyone within the industry who is interested in participating in a workshop to help with changes to CPD guidelines and log book. The workshop is set down for November 7 in Wellington.
