Andy Loader‘s paper presented at the QuarryNZ 2017 conference titled “QUARRYING IN THE AUCKLAND REGION – Past Present and Future” required a considerable amount of research, particularly to obtain copies of the many photos from library archival records.
He discussed the lengths that some former quarry operators went to leave and develop an area that could be enjoyed by future generations, – the Eden Gardens in Omana Road, Epsom, and Wrights Water Gardens at Mauku near Patumahoe are notable examples.
To those not familiar with the Auckland quarrying scene, it was staggering that in the last 20 years, a similar number of quarries have closed, continuing to put enormous strains on supply of aggregate to the burgeoning infrastructure and housing demands of the Auckland region.
Andy’s presentation was a unanimous choice by the referees. Well done.
