“A legend has just died. Our column of Andesite Rock has broken”

This was the notice announcing the sad news on 7 April 2016 that MERV LEACH had passed away, aged 87.

Merv had been involved in the quarrying business since the early 50’s spending many of his early days delivering road metal while his brother Bruce did most of the loading at the quarry.
He was actively involved with with Tirohia, Waitawheta, Matatoki and Kauaeranga quarries until he “retired” in the mid 1980’s.

Diversification saw the HG Leach & Sons business become a player in the landfill business in several locations in NZ and in Fiji.

Merv attended many Contractors Federation and IOQNZ conferences and was particularly proud when HG Leach & Co Ltd secured the MIMICO Environmental Award (2002) for the Tirohia landfill.

We know he was proud of his sons and grandsons, following keenly the progress of each in their apprenticeship programmes, as well as Warwick’s role as an IOQNZ board member and President (2009-2011).

Mrs Leach (Joyce) has been his constant companion for over 62 years.

Merv you’ll be sadly missed by the quarrying fraternity.

Our sincere condolences to Joyce, Graham, Warwick, Cheree and families.
