FEATURED OPERATION - WHAREHINE CONTRACTORS
Premium-grade aggregates from Wharehine Quarries are an integral part of much of our
region's infrastructure - and have been for more than 50 years.
Strong and resistant to weathering, Greywacke rock from Wharehine’s Millbrook and Matakana
quarries paves thousands of kilometres of roads throughout the North Auckland Region. During
construction of the high-profile New Zealand Transport Agency’s Northern Gateway Toll Road
between Orewa and Puhoi, Wharehine’s supplied and delivered a staggering 300,000 tonnes of
quality roading aggregate and 12,000 tonnes of special asphalt chip.
Wharehine Quarries flexible production schedules and ability to blend and create specialised
products to strict quality standards within relatively short lead-in times means Wharehine is a
preferred supplier for a diverse range of premium and virgin quality aggregates. As such the
company is the largest producer of premium quality aggregate within the Rodney District.

Matakana Quarry:
Matakana Quarry has been producing quality aggregates and other quarry products since 1979. The
fully functioning quarry covering more than 24 hectares of land produces aggregate for the North
Auckland Region and beyond.
Known for its premium quality roading aggregate and its readiness to work closely with clients
to achieve exacting quality standards and production deadlines, this quarry was the source of
more than 300,000 tonnes of metal used on the Northern Gateway Toll Road during the 2006-09
construction period.
It also supplied more than 8000 cubic metres of special grade coarse
aggregate for production of hard-wearing stone mastic asphalt used on the same project – enough
for the 7.5 kilometres of new four-lane highway between Orewa and Puhoi. |

| Millbrook Quarry:
Rock from the large Millbrook Quarry, at Whangaripo Valley Road, has served the Rodney District
for over 50 years.
Millbrook Quarry is a 50/50 joint venture with Holcim NZ Ltd, a major cement manufacturer,
aggregate, and ready mix concrete supplier. Also known as Wharehine’s Whangaripo Quarry, the
Millbrook Quarry site has been part of the Wharehine Group since 1955.
The fully functioning quarry covers over 240 hectares and has the potential to be quarried for
many decades to come. Aggregate from this quarry is popular as a concrete chip destined for use
in tunnels and bridges, roading projects and diverse concrete structures, from bridges to
Takapuna apartment towers, local school playgrounds to the lining of the Johnstone’s Hill
Tunnels. |
